Thankfulness Feb 28

And aren't I thriving as a result!

Today I am thanking God for:

183.  Some Pokemon cards returned (not all but at least some!);

184.   Emma taking the opportunity to talk about organ donation at school today.  Her class watched Coen's story on BTN and afterwards Emma got up and told them all about Ashlea's transplant - and Murray's brain injury I think??  Who knows what the kids thought but I was very proud of her and it earned her a 'Shooting Star' award.  Thank goodness I had the chance to update her teacher about our family before she pulled that out for class news;

185.  Miss Ashlea's tenacity... Both Furby and Tom are out of batteries.  Apparently the charger works better if you watch it and ask how much longer every 20 seconds (for the record it will be 5 more HOURS).

How many now Mum?

Thankfulness Feb 27

One organ donor can save or transform the lives
of up to 10 people

Some days are harder to be thankful than others aren't they?

Today I am thanking God for:

178.  My washing machine and dryer which make it so easy to wash the sheets - Ashlea's bed was full of milk and bile this morning due to an overnight pump failure (for the second day running);

179.  Easy access to Ashlea's medical team.  The change in routine due to the milky mess meant I forgot to give Ashlea her morning meds.  PANIC.  These are her anti-rejection meds for her kidney - fortunately I was able to speak to her doctor and find out what to do (someone is enjoying a late night as I now can't give her night time meds until later than usual);

180.  The fact that I had bought an extra packet of Taco shells when I was doing the grocery shopping;

Dinner Fail

181.  That Murray caught and released the lizard (and chased a little bird out of the house too - why is our house so appealing to the local wildlife???).  I'm hoping it was THE lizard that has been teasing me for months but Murray did helpfully remind me that it may have had babies while inside;

182.  Even I can't think of a way to be thankful for the letter from the taxman telling me I claimed something I wasn't eligible for (oops) or for the little ratbag at school who stole Emma's pokemon cards out of her bag.  I am however very thankful to find these in the shops...you know they are my weakness!

YUM

Discover the facts about organ donation
Decide if you want to become a donor
Discuss your wishes with your family

Today I am thanking God for:

175.  Hot chips with vinegar for lunch;

176.  A mid-week child-free trip to Ikea with a friend;

This is what the lifter is really for... Expedits!!!

177.  A signed copy of Hope Beyond Cure arriving in my mailbox.  I think this is the only book I own that has been signed by the author!

I can't recommend this book highly enough to anyone who is interested in knowing the hope Jesus offers.  All this week I have been talking about organ donation as a way to save lives - but really it is only a temporary life saver.  Even those who have successful organ transplants are still going to die one day.  This book talks about the hope of eternal life that comes from believing in Jesus.  This hope holds firm even if you don't get the transplant or your cancer isn't cured.  Written by someone with incurable cancer it is not one of those 'what would you know about real life' books - this book is written from the oncology ward by someone who knows what it is to suffer - but who also knows that there is hope beyond this suffering - hope for eternity.  If you are interested in reading it you can purchase it by clicking on the link above (or you can borrow my copy if you're a local).

I'm thriving thanks to the gift of organ donation!

Today I am thanking God for:

172.  The 391 organ donors last year who enabled 1122 Australians to receive the gift of life;

173.  My great group of bible study ladies;

174  Tissues, tissues and more tissues ... Ashlea shared her cold with me.

Thankfulness Feb 24 Have The Chat

Did you know that in Australia a person has a 10 times greater chance of requiring an organ or tissue transplant than of becoming a donor?  Organ donation is medically possible in less than 1% of all deaths.  Please have the chat that can save lives and let your family know your organ donation wishes.

Thank you to those of you who have shared Ashlea's video for Donate Life Week.  Please keep sharing it!

Today I am thanking God for:

169.  Ashlea's transplant surgeons.  Imagine if your day job was to save and transform children's lives every day?  What an amazing gift - and responsibility - they have;

170.  Our local pharmacist who realised (before I did) that we were about to run out of meds and turned up on my doorstep with them;

171.  The life, vitality and enthusiasm that is Ashlea's post-transplant.

Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
, and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

Thankfulness Feb 23: Donate Life Week

Today is the launch of Donate Life Week.  DonateLife Week is Australia's national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation.

Obviously we have a vested interest in talking about organ donation.  Organ and tissue donation saves lives. One donor can transform the lives of up to 10 people and significantly improve the lives of many more.  Anyone who has been reading this blog for awhile will know how organ donation has transformed Ashlea's life.

Please watch Ashlea's video supporting Donate Life week (video link):

Today I am thanking God for:

166.  The advances in medicine that have occurred over the last 100 years meaning organ transplantation is now a successful, viable option for people with end stage organ failure;

167.  Access to world class health care - without it Ashlea wouldn't be alive.  (Australia boasts one of the highest transplantation success rates in the world. Kidney transplant survival rates are about 90% in the first year and over 75% in five years. Patient survival rates for heart and liver transplantation are also 90% in the first year and 85% after five years. Pancreas transplants have the highest survival rate of 94% at one year and 87% at five years);

168.  Murray's willingness to donate his kidney to Ashlea.  Without it she would have spent the last two years on dialysis instead of spending it growing, thriving and flourishing since her transplant.

Thankfulness Feb 22

Today I am thanking God for:

163.  Some SPONTANEOUS outdoor fun time for my girls.  It didn't last long but they got up from their screens and played outside for awhile without any prompting.  Maybe there is hope for us after all?

164.  Understanding tradesmen who come to your house and have to put up with (a) getting groped by Ashlea - unintentionally of course and (b) being bossed around by her;

165.  Time to work on a little project with Ashlea.

Thankfulness Feb 21

Today I am thanking God for:

160.  No late notes despite our slow start to the school day;

161.   Ashlea scoring 100% on her first ever spelling test (her spelling words were: can, ran, man, fan and pan);

162.  Awesome news that my friend is defying the odds in her wait for a heart transplant.

Thankfulness Feb 20

Today I am thanking God for:

1 week down...how many to go?

157.  Week one of homework survived - we even practised Ashlea's words for her spelling test tomorrow;

158.  A lovely sunny but not too hot day;

159.  The opportunity and privilege it is to read the bible with other women.

We may have survived week 1 of homework but this picture found by my friend Kim pretty much sums up my feelings about homework:

Thankfulness Feb 19

Today I am thanking God for:

Emma's Homework

154.  Some much needed therapy - aka a cup of tea with a friend;

155.  The best ever recipe book found;

Which recipe to start with is the question!

156.  Emma's quirky take on life.  The picture at the top is from her homework this week - a drawing and description of our family.  Can you read the descriptions?  Do you think I should make an appointment with her new teacher to explain our family???
Audrey - good behaved, neat.  A girly girl.  Lost some of toe when born.
Ashlea - Audrey's twin.  Has a disability.  Has had kidney transplant.  A bit girly girl.
Mum - does all work.  Is Mum.  I love her.
Dad - has brain injury so does nearly nothing.  I love him. Is Dad.
Me - I like Pokemon and Minecraft.  Playful, curious.  Likes technology.  Not girly girl.

Thankfulness Feb 18: Happy Birthday Aunty Carolin

Today I am thanking God for Aunty Carolin.  It's her birthday today.  I had to go back to late 2012 to find some photos of her that weren't just silly phone snaps.  Look at Ashlea with her short hair and Emma with her long hair (poor Audrey would love long hair but it just won't grow).

I am thanking God for Aunty Carolin:

151.  For helping whenever there is an emergency - and also when there's not;

152.  For paying our bills at the moment (yes, seriously);

153.  For accompanying us on fun yet challenging outings to the theatre, beach, movies, ice-skating - pretty much anywhere really.

Obviously that is a very abbreviated list but I could probably fill the entire 1000 thank yous challenge if I were to list all the ways she helps us.

Thank you Aunty Carolin - and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

My big girl

Today I am thanking God for:

148.  A reasonably good day at work.  I said to my boss at the end of the day that I am either getting used to the new system and haven't made many errors today OR I have made an error on every single job I've done.  I'm sure he'll let me know which of the two it was;

149.  My computer related job which means I am quite handy at modding minecraft as required;

150.  Some clever people at the Winter Olympics to watch while I relax on the couch this evening.  Audrey is mesmerised by the figure skating and can't drag herself away from it to go to bed!

How to play Minecraft after your chair breaks...

Today I am thanking God for:

145.  Encouraging words from encouraging people at church;

146.  Quiet screen filled rainy days;

147.  A roof over our heads in a safe suburb of a great country.  For some reason some days I feel tired, anxious and stressed even though nothing is wrong - well, nothing has changed from the day before anyway!  These are the days that I am doing this thankfulness challenge for - to remind me of what I DO have when I'd rather have a pity party about what I don't.

Today I am thanking God for:

Thanks for getting in the pool Lou - too cold for me!

142.  A night out for Audrey with Aunty Carolin to see the musical Annie;

143.  Saturday afternoon fun time at Kellie and Lou's;

144.  Coffee out with some Mums who get it.

Also known as 'let's drown Lou...'

Thankfulness Feb 14

Today I am thanking God for:

139.  A tip off from a friend about a Sing A Long session of the movie Frozen.  I've booked our tickets - my girls live and breath that movie - we have to go!

140.  That in spite of having a dodgy memory some things aren't forgotten.  Someone at respite must have told Murray it was Valentines Day...

Behold the level of romance in our house...

141.  Fortune Cookie Wisdom.  Ashlea's class had yum cha today (she licked a few things and nibbled a prawn chip).  This was her fortune cookie...

This is actually gospel wisdom not fortune cookie wisdom.  The bible says this:

Heb 4:16
Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The fortune cookie writer was correct - God provides the grace to help us cope in every circumstance.   Without it there is no way I would be able to cope!

Today I am thanking God for:

136.  Ashlea being back to her happy self today;

137.  licorice allsorts;

138.  A gift voucher and card in the mail from a lovely friend.

Thankfulness Feb 12

Today I am thanking God for:

133.  You'll never believe it but today I am actually thankful for home readers - look at Ashlea learning to read - how exciting;

134.  I am also thankful for disposable nappies and gloves - Ashlea has a 'situation' going on.  Hopefully we will be able to stay out of hospital - so far so good;

135.  I am also thankful for book recommendations and the guilty pleasure of ignoring your responsibilities because you've got your nose in a book.  Even though I don't like Ashlea being sick it has been kind of nice to have to stay home and read a book all day.

Such a good girl

Today I am thanking God for:

130.  My little trooper who is now such an angel at blood tests - she plays with her iPad while we wait and then doesn't utter a peep when it's her turn - just holds her arm out and keeps nice and still;

131.  A good pathology collector so it was all over nice and quick;

132.  iPads, Talking Toms and phones to keep us entertained during the wait - Tuesdays is a bad day to go to clinic - today's pathology queue took an hour;

132.  Most of all I am thankful for Ashlea's stable kidney function and that we get another 2 month break from blood tests.  Today her creatinine was 45 and all her other numbers were great.  Our next appointment won't be until after her two year kidneyversary.

Anyone with Menieres does not leave home without their
emergency supply...

Today has been a bit rough.  I woke up this morning with a jolt - a jolt of dizziness the likes of which I have not experienced for years.  It was not pleasant and it sent me into a panic.  I have suffered incredibly debilitating dizziness in the past (imagine months and months of laying on the couch barely able to move).  My mind immediately started racing thinking "I can't look after my family and be dizzy!  I can't do this God.  It's too much".   I'm still freaked out and would love it if you would pray that the dizziness would go away - never to return!

Even on difficult days it is still possible to see God at work though.  Today I am thanking God for:

127.  Drugs - and that I have a supply readily available and that they worked to subdue the dizziness;

128.  That my sister left late for work today (she usually leaves before we get up!) and was able to help get the girls ready and walk them to school;

129.  For an emergency appointment with my neurologist.  He wasn't sure if it was a positional thing or a Meniere's thing (I get both - my left ear is totally stuffed) but even if sometimes there are no clear answers it's nice to at least be taken seriously.

Backyard Beach

Today I am thanking God for:

124.  A reminder to treasure Jesus above all else;

125.  Our backyard beach to enjoy on a lovely summer afternoon;

126.  A loyal friend to take Murray to the movies to see boy movies (Robocop) so I don't have to see them.

PS Yes I think I'm going to go back to doing daily thank yous - it's better for my mental and spiritual health!

Thankfulness Feb 8

Tom would you like to try some chocolate?

Today I am thanking God:

121.  For Aunty Carolin shouting us Saturday afternoon family fun - a trip to the movies and the chocolate cafe;

122.  That Ashlea can do movies now - and not just movies but fireworks and concerts and things that were once completely unthinkable.  Our world has gotten a lot bigger as a result;

123.  Tolerant cafe patrons - Ashlea launched into song while we were at the chocolate cafe - and then kept it up all the way from the cafe back through the shops until we reached the car (and in the car on the way home and the shower when she got home.  She's stopped now - better go and see what mischief she is up to).

Mmmm...yum.

Poor Grandma!

Today I am thanking God for:

118.  Good samaritans who help your mum up when she trips on the (disgracefully uneven) footpath;

119.  Good, thorough medical care - she got x-rays, a CT, stitches and a home mods referral all in a matter of hours;

120.  An answer as to why Emma is so short - her bone age is only 7 years 10 months (her chronological age is 9 years 11 months).  No wonder the infants kids are bigger than her!!  All it means is that she will have her growth spurt later than her peers.  And probably be short like her Mum!

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Thankful Thursday

This week I am thanking God for:

(Video link A New Tom)

108.  A day 'in the office' instead of working from home and the benefits that come with that... like a chance to chat with colleagues...and have hot chips for lunch;

109.  Piano lessons with a new teacher who also teaches singing (Audrey is in heaven);

110.  A friend picking up some feeding bags from the hospital for me so I didn't have to make a special trip just to get them;

111.  A return to bible study groups now that school has gone back;

112.  Hearing my big girls read to each other;

113.  Getting together to talk and pray with other mums who have kids with special needs;

114.  Getting a whole lot of boring paperwork done.  I don't see how one small person can generate soooooo much paperwork but she does;

115.  A cancellation at the paediatrician tomorrow for Emma;

116.  Neighbours to walk Audrey and Ashlea to school while I take Emma to her appointment.  Seems legit to ask them now that they actually have a child at school;

117.  The love of a girl and her Talking Tom.  Ashlea is loving having a new Tom and I love seeing her so happy.  I am also loving that Furby has been knocked off his noisy perch.

All is right in Ashlea's world...

Look Who's Here...

Mummy I love this Foot Tom

107.  Today I am thanking God for ebay, Amazon, the internet and all things online shopping. Look who I found on ebay - FOOT TOM!  I was so excited when he arrived this morning I could hardly wait until the girls got home from school.  Ashlea is beside herself with excitement and hasn't stopped playing with him all afternoon.

He's so beautiful.

Do you think she's excited???

Thankfulness Continued

So even though I'm not posting daily thank yous I'm still writing them down - to be randomly posted when I get around to it.

I thanking God for:

Feb 1

103.  A trip to the movies with the girls.  I decided after last week's successful ice skating session that we needed to schedule in more fun.  I am trying to set aside Saturday afternoons for 'Saturday Afternoon Fun Time' with the girls.  So far ice skating and the movies have cost me a small fortune so next week we might go for something cheaper!

104.  Time for a bit of driving practice for Ashlea - now that the chair has been made right hand drive she is havaing less crashes - although I don't let her drive in the house yet as she scrapes the walls and crashes into the furniture.  I did enter her crash video into Australia's Funniest Home Videos after a friend suggested it - maybe she will win enough money to repair the damage she is doing while learning to drive;

Feb 2

105.  Aunty Carolin helping on the pizza production line.  Home made pizza always sounds like an easy dinner but ends up taking ages by the time you make the dough (and extra gluten free dough) and cut up all the toppings;

106.  A productive Sunday afternoon - groceries purchased, today and tomorrow's dinners cooked, school lunches in the freezer, uniforms laid out and tomorrow's washing hung out today.  I'm never that organised which is why it is noteworthy.

Psalm 7:17

YUM!

Today I am thanking God for:

100.  Chocolate birthday dinner with a friend;

101.  Cats and funny cat videos on youtube;

102.  A couple of hours home ALONE for the first time since mid December.  I can't say whether any cat videos were watched during that time...

Psalm 7:17
I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness; I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.
